- Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP)
A Non-Invasive Treatment for Chronic Angina
Still having chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue despite medications, stents, or bypass surgery?
EECP may offer another option.
No surgery. No needles. No hospital stay.
Understanding the Treatment
What Is EECP?
Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive outpatient treatment designed to improve circulation and increase blood flow to the heart.
During treatment, comfortable cuffs placed around the legs inflate and deflate in rhythm with your heartbeat.

- Non-Invasive
- Outpatient Treatment
Having Chest Pain
Still Having Chest Pain After Stents or Bypass?
Many patients continue to experience angina even after medications, coronary stents, or bypass surgery.
For some patients, another procedure may not be possible—or may not be the best option.
EECP may provide another way to improve symptoms without another invasive procedure.
COULD EECP HELP YOU?
Could You Be a Candidate for EECP?
EECP may be considered for patients who:
- Have persistent angina
- Have already undergone stents or bypass
- Continue to have symptoms despite medications
- Have limited options for another procedure
- Want to explore a non-invasive treatment
- Have been advised that additional revascularization may not be appropriate
WHAT TREATMENT IS LIKE
What Happens During EECP?
You relax comfortably while cuffs placed around your calves, thighs, and lower body gently inflate and deflate in synchronization with your heartbeat.
A typical course consists of:
CMS describes a usual full course as 35 one-hour treatments, generally delivered five days per week, for qualifying severe angina patients.

Does Medicare Cover EECP?
Medicare covers external counter pulsation therapy for certain patients with severe, disabling chronic angina who meet Medicare’s medical criteria.
Eligibility must be determined individually.
CMS currently describes ECP/EECP as a non-invasive outpatient therapy for coronary artery disease refractory to medical and/or surgical treatment and limits national coverage for cardiac use to qualifying severe stable angina under specified criteria.
